Kubuntu is a user friendly operating system based on KDE, the K Desktop Environment. With a predictable 6 month release cycle and part of the Ubuntu project, Kubuntu is the GNU/Linux distribution for everyone.

The Edubuntu Linux distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to schools, through its customised school environment. The current version of Edubuntu is aimed at classroom use, and future versions of Edubuntu will expand to other educational usage, such as university use.

Xubuntu is a complete GNU/Linux based system with an Ubuntu base. It's lighter, and more efficient than Ubuntu with GNOME or KDE, since it uses the Xfce Desktop environment, which makes it ideal for old or low-end machines, as well as thin-client networks.

Fluxbuntu is a Ubuntu-based derivative that uses FluxBox as the desktop environment (window manager). It is lightweight, swift and efficient compared to Gnome or KDE. These features makes Fluxbuntu suitable for vast range of computers, from low-end to high-end.

The idea of Ubuntu Lite is to bring the power of Ubuntu across to the users of Legacy systems. So not just to make a small linux as this has been done before (Puppy Linux, Damn Small linux, the Rule Project). Nor to make a useable linux based desktop Operating system (that has been done with Ubuntu Linux, Beatrix) The idea is to bring the power of Ubuntu to the typical users of Legacy hardware (ie the grandma who gets an old P2 set up for her but does not know how to use it).

So to this end the Operating system needs to be:

* Easily used by people with minimal computer skills
* Useable on a resurected system (see system specifications below)
* and is able to satisfy a typical users requirement of Applications and functionality.

These are the three core aims of the Ubuntu Lite Project

We will also provide development guides to anyone who wants to trim down their versions or help others use linux on reconditioned hardware. I hope that you enjoy Ubuntu Lite and that you find it useful.

The main goal of nUbuntu is to create a distribution which is derived from the Ubuntu distribution, and add packages related to security testing, and remove unneeded packages, such as Gnome, Openoffice.org, and Evolution. nUbuntu is the result of an idea two people had to create a new distribution for the learning experience.

Gnoppix is a linux live cd based upon Ubuntu . It can be compared to Knoppix but Gnoppix uses GNOME as desktop environment.

Ubuntu Christian Edition is a free, open source operating system geared towards Christians. It is based on the popular Ubuntu Linux. Ubuntu is a complete Linux-based operating system, freely available with both community and professional support.

The goal of Ubuntu Christian Edition is to bring the power and security of Ubuntu to Christians. Ubuntu Christian Edition is suitable for both desktop and server use. The current Ubuntu Christian Edition release supports PC (Intel x86).
