Summer of Code 2006 Google`s Open Source Projects

Kompanija Gugl napravila je novi program za povezivanje studenata sa softverskim organizacijama nazvan "Summer of Code" . Akademci čije prijave budu prihvaćene radiće tokom leta na projektu i steći će veliku praksu u programiranju i komunikaciji u okviru modernih softverskih projekata, a takođe će zaraditi 4500$.

Summer of Code 2006 is a program that offers student developers stipends to create new open source programs or to help currently established projects. Google will be working with a variety of open source, free software, and technology-related groups to identify and fund several hundred projects over a three-month period. The inaugural instance of the program, which took place last summer, brought together 400 students and 40 mentoring organizations from 49 countries. We`d like to include even more organizations and participants this year.

The program`s goals are to inspire young developers and provide students in Computer Science and related fields the opportunity to do work related to their academic pursuits during the summer, and to support existing open source projects and organizations. Since we`re looking to find developers around the world (many of whom may have considered creating open source software but havent yet taken the plunge), we felt that concentrating on the student population was a good place to focus our efforts. Further, since no single organization could possibly mentor hundreds of students working on disparate projects, we thought it made sense to spread the work throughout the open source and free software community. We also think that the Apache Software Foundation (for instance) knows a lot more about what an Apache project needs than Google does and is more likely to ensure that an applicant gets the right kind of guidance so they can create acceptable code.

How does the program work?

1. Organizations who would like to participate in Summer of Code 2006 should choose an organization administrator(s) to represent them
2. Organization administrators submit their organization`s interest by emailing soc2006support@google.com
3. Google notifies of acceptance and creates the organization`s account on the Summer of Code site
4. Organizations sign up mentors and publish their pool of project ideas
5. Students submit to Google proposals to work with particular mentoring organizations; Google routes to the mentor organization, and the proposals are ranked by mentors working with those organizations.
6. Accepted students start work based on their proposals; mentors give guidance throughout the duration of the program
7. Mentors provide mid-term evaluations of student progress
8. Mentors provide a final review of student work, and each student provides a single overall review of her/his mentor
9. Student uploads completed program to Google site

Who sees my evaluation?

Mentors evaluations of students will be reviewed by Google`s program administrators, but won`t be released

to students unless requested by the mentoring organization`s administrator(s). Students reviews of mentors will be shared with Google`s program administrators and with the mentoring organization`s administrator(s), but not with the student`s mentor unless requested by

the student. In the case where the mentoring organization`s administrator and the mentor are one and the same, the student evaluation will be shared with the mentor. In some cases, Google`s program administrators may need to share the results of the evaluations with the student and/or the mentor to arbitrate when payment should not be made; should this need arise, all parties will be notified in advance.

Who is eligible to participate in Summer of Code 2006?

In order to participate in the program, you must be a student. Google defines a student as an individual enrolled in

or accepted into an accredited institution including but not necessarily limited to colleges, universities, masters programs, PhD programs and undergraduate programs. You should be prepared, upon request, to provide Google with transcripts from

your accredited institution as proof of enrollment or admission status. You may be enrolled as a full-time or part-time student.

You must also be eligible to work in the country in which you`ll reside throughout the duration of the program, e.g. if you are in the United States on an F-1 visa, you are welcome to apply to Summer of Code as long as you have U.S. work authorization.
